Bright lights moving across the western sky aren’t UFOs – they’re Amazon’s Project Kuiper satellites. Learn how they work and why they shine so brightly over Broken Hill after sunset.
The September 2025 night sky offers some of the year’s best stargazing in Broken Hill. After the early lunar eclipse on 8 September, the evenings grow darker and reveal stunning views of the Milky Way. Saturn shines at opposition around 21 September, while Venus and Jupiter dazzle in the pre-dawn sky. With New Moon on 22 September, it’s the perfect time to spot deep-sky objects and enjoy the pure outback night sky. Outback Astronomy sessions guide you to the highlights.
On 8 September 2025, Outback Astronomy in Broken Hill ran its first all-night total lunar eclipse event. With crystal-clear skies, guests watched the Moon darken and enjoyed rare views of the Andromeda Galaxy, the Pleiades and Saturn — sights usually washed out by a full Moon. The relaxed, social vibe ran through the night with warm drinks and a sunrise breakfast. This recap captures what it felt like to witness a total lunar eclipse under the big outback sky.
