Spring Night Sky in Broken Hill

The outback skies welcome back Saturn, and the spring season

Spring brings a changing night sky to Broken Hill. As the evenings grow warmer, the bright winter band of the Milky Way begins moving towards the western horizon, while spring constellations such as Pegasus, Cetus and Cygnus become part of the early evening view. Saturn also returns to the evening sky in September 2026, reaching opposition on Sunday 4 October, the same day daylight saving begins in Broken Hill. Later in spring and into summer, Orion, Taurus, Canis Major, Canis Minor and the Andromeda Galaxy become highlights of the night sky. For visitors to Outback Astronomy, spring is a beautiful transition season, offering a mix of fading winter views and the first signs of the summer sky.

A Changing of the Stars

Spring brings change to the Outback.

The days become longer, the evenings warmer and, little by little, the familiar winter night sky begins to rearrange itself.

We notice it every year at Outback Astronomy.

The great hazy band of the Milky Way that has dominated our winter evenings begins its slow retreat towards the western horizon. Constellations that we have been watching for months follow it westward, while over in the east another collection of stars begins to appear.

It is one of the lovely things about astronomy – the sky you see on one visit is not the sky you will necessarily see when you return.

Spring arrives in the night sky

Through September, some wonderful constellations begin taking their place in our early evening sky.

One of the easiest to recognise is Pegasus, traditionally imagined as the great winged horse of Greek mythology. Its distinctive pattern of four stars – the Great Square of Pegasus – is a useful marker in the spring sky.

Nearby is Cetus, the Whale (or maybe a sea monster if you follow mythological interpretations), a sprawling constellation occupying a considerable area of sky without necessarily announcing itself with particularly bright stars.

And then there is Cygnus, the swan.

Cygnus belongs to the rich star fields of the Milky Way hazy band and contains the brilliant star Deneb. From our southern viewpoint, the swan doesn’t always look quite like the elegant bird pictured in northern-hemisphere star charts, but its great cross-shaped pattern is distinctive once you know where to look (we often point out the “northern cross” to guests).

By mid to late spring, however, Cygnus and the brightest regions of our winter Milky Way are beginning their journey towards the western evening horizon.

They are making room for what comes next.

Meanwhile, Saturn rises

This year there is another beautiful object entering our evening sky – the ringed planet Saturn.

During September, Saturn rises increasingly early in the east, becoming easier to include in an evening beneath the stars. This year see it amongst the dim background stars of Pisces, not too far from the dim ring-shape of stars known as the “circlet of Pisces”. The circlet is so dim it is only visible under very dark conditions. During early September, 2026, we can view the circlet even though it is low to the horizon. Then gaze to the right (further to the east) and see Saturn against the dark background sky. It blazes with immense brightness.

Then comes Sunday 4 October 2026.

On this day, daylight saving begins in Broken Hill – when our clocks jump forward by an hour and sunset is suddenly later.

Coincidentally, 4 October is also the day that Saturn reaches opposition.

Opposition occurs when Earth lies between Saturn and the Sun. It means Saturn is at its closest and brightest for the year, rising around sunset and remaining in our sky through the night.

To your naked eye it will simply look like a bright, steady point of light.

Put a telescope on it and everything changes.

There is something particularly memorable about seeing Saturn’s rings with your own eyes. No photograph is required to explain what you are looking at. When you see in through a telescope, there it is! It is another world, more than a billion kilometres away, surrounded by its extraordinary system of rings. We usually see Titan nearby and Rhea, its two largest moons amongst the 293 confirmed moons orbiting Saturn.

The Milky Way begins to leave us

Meanwhile, something else is happening in the west.

During late winter, the Milky Way Galaxy, or more particularly its hazy band, can be seen as a magnificent glowing smudge stretching from Crux in the south west, to Cygnus in the north. Its dense central regions stretch high across the sky, filled with dark lanes, star clouds and enormous numbers of stars blended together into that familiar milky haze. We often point out the teapot, the bow and arrow, the stinger tail and other relics from stories told by ancient stargazers.

But, thankfully, Earth keeps travelling around the Sun – in a stable, secure and unchanging journey. As spring progresses, our evening viewpoint into the galaxy changes. This is what makes stargazing so exciting. By October, the Milky Way is low in the west.

It hasn’t disappeared, of course.

We have simply turned our evening view towards another part of our galaxy. In November, as we gaze up high overhead, we see a pure starry view – no galactic haze, just lots and lots of stars.

But before then, the October viewing time brings some favourite objects back into our sky.

Here comes Orion

Look towards the east later in the evening and the first stars of our summer sky begin appearing.

As October moves into November, Taurus the Bull becomes increasingly prominent, along with the beautiful little cluster of stars we know as the Pleiades.

And then comes one of the great constellations of them all.

Orion.

Most people recognise Orion by the famous row of three stars forming his belt.

But from Australia there is a delightful complication.

Our view of Orion is upside down compared with the traditional northern-hemisphere picture of the Greek hunter.

We have looked at those same stars very differently. Orion’s belt and sword form the familiar Saucepan that many of us were taught to find as children.

As the weeks pass, Orion rises earlier and climbs higher.

Following him into our summer sky is Canis Major, the great dog, containing Sirius – the brightest star in Earth’s night sky.

Nearby is Canis Minor, the little dog, bringing with it another classic bright star – Procyon.

By December and January, the hunter and his dogs become one of the signature views of a Broken Hill summer night.

A galaxy beyond our own

There is another spring visitor we will be watching for as it comes into view during November and continues being visible throughout December – it is, of course, Andromeda.

The constellation itself appears low in our northern sky from Broken Hill, but within it is something quite extraordinary – the Andromeda Galaxy.

It does not belong to the Milky Way.

It is another enormous galaxy altogether.

From our site it is naked eye visible on clear, dark nights (no gibbous moon is best, thin crescents generally not a problem). It is seen as a faint hazy patch. Binoculars help to resolve the shape and structure – you can see it has an unmistakable spiral galaxy structure in optimum conditions.

Why view with optimum conditions? Because this galaxy is a far away object. You are looking across roughly 2.5 million light-years of space.

The photons reaching your eyes began their journey long before modern humans existed.

Andromeda is one of those objects where knowing what you are looking at changes the experience completely.

Every season has its own sky

This is why we don’t really have one Outback Astronomy night sky.

We have many – across the changing views as we orbit the Sun.

Yes, under clear, dark conditions the Andromeda Galaxy can be visible from Outback Astronomy as a faint hazy patch. Binoculars help reveal more of its shape and structure. It is best viewed without a bright gibbous moon in the sky.
