Description
At sunset on Tuesday 3 March 2026, a full moon rises just before entering a lunar eclipse. It is hosted by the constellation Leo. The sky is brightened after sunset as the rising moon reflects sunlight all about the night sky. It is so bright that any place in the sky near the moon is awash with intense illumination. Jupiter will be spectacular viewing this night. We get to experience total darkness on this night of the full Moon – as its face is blocked by the shadow of Earth.
Our sky show begins after 9pm on Tuesday 3 March 2026.
The sky changes with an eerie darkness. Earth’s shadow slowly crosses the moon, revealing hidden gems otherwise overwhelmed by moonlight.
During this six hour astronomical experience we graze and gaze as the brightness goes and a black sky returns. Enjoy cold drinks from the bar, and our coffee machine will be working hard during the event, supplying barista coffee, hot chocolate, chai latte, mochas and so on. Food service includes a light dinner – a gourmet sausage sizzle from sunset – with bite-sized snacks served later for dessert (eg fruit, cheese and crackers, chocolate and similar delicious morsels). You must provide information about any allergies at the time of booking.
This is a wonderful opportunity to practice your astro-imaging under the big sky. Audio and ear phones included. Telescope and binocular viewing throughout the event. Our regular sky show during totality will make sense of the view. Drinking water available. Price includes reclined chair with sleeping bag for additional warmth in the event of a cool change, side tables, food and beverages as described and access to optics.
If you want to understand what’s going on and if you have time on your hands to stop and enjoy this natural moment, come and join us in Broken Hill. We also include a copy of Outback Astronomy’s Stargazing Field Guide to cement your knowledge of the sky view during your outback travels.
