Awe, Starbathing and the Surprising Benefits of Stargazing
Could looking up at the night sky improve your wellbeing? Discover the science of awe, the rise of starbathing, and why Broken Hill is the perfect place to reconnect under the stars.
Stargazing in Broken Hill offers a unique way to unwind, reconnect and experience the outback at its most beautiful. With recent rains transforming the landscape and clear autumn skies overhead, Outback Astronomy’s guided experiences combine comfort, storytelling and awe to create a memorable night under the stars – perfect for families, couples and travellers seeking something deeper than a typical holiday activity.
The countryside around Broken Hill has changed. After the last year with barely any rain and long periods of very dry spells, the rains this February and March have left the outback looking revived; grasses brushed with green, sunlight catching on dew in the cooler mornings and the air feeling softer and cleaner. Locals are smiling more, grateful for the rare chance to see the land refreshed. Travellers arriving this Easter will witness something special: a landscape in quiet celebration, not just surviving, but flourishing.
That sense of renewal seeps into the experience at Outback Astronomy. Here, the team understand why people come – sometimes it’s curiosity, sometimes it’s the need to feel small in a universe that puts the news cycle in its place. You’re greeted with warmth, and there’s a softness to the evening. Recliners are set out facing into the direction of the rising of the Milky Way Galaxy, sleeping bags folded and ready, and as twilight fades into night, a hush falls over the group. It isn’t silence, but the easy quiet of shared anticipation. All the lights go off and in the blackout of the stargazing site, the gasps flow in unison – the beauty of the sky is revealed. It is spectacular. It is incredible. It is our place in the universe.
There’s a relief in letting the world’s noise fall away, even if it’s just for a night. Your sky guide will not overwhelm you with facts or jargon. Instead, you’re offered stories and information that explain the view – the slow rise of the Southern Cross, the arc of the Milky Way, planets that have circled these skies since before there was worry or a war. The commentary is supported by a powerful laser pointer so you can lean back and listen as the view is explained or close your eyes and drift.
It’s practical but deeply thoughtful. Bring your own favourite fold up chair and snuggly blankets if you prefer. Be sure to pack warm layers. When you book, order a hot chocolate to sip during the sky show. Let the cool night air on your cheeks remind you how good it can feel to be present. The land stretches out around you, dark and open, and each new constellation you become acquainted with feels like a quiet answer to the noise you’ve left behind.
This year’s rainfall means more than just green paddocks. It’s a reminder that even after harsh times, beauty returns. The outback has a way of teaching patience and humility. During autumn, the air carries a faint scent of damp earth and wildflowers after rain. Birds call out at dusk and sometimes you can hear the distant rustle of kangaroos or foxes in the brush. It’s this slow, sensory immersion that many travellers say stays with them long after the evening ends.
If you’re bringing children, there’s an easy magic in seeing them point out new stars. For adults, it’s often the quietness – the realisation that your daily worries shrink to their true size when you’re faced with the enormity of the night sky.
In a year marked by uncertainty, many of us are looking for more than just distraction. We want to feel restored, to share experiences that actually matter. Outback Astronomy offers this kind of quiet transformation, not through spectacle, but through presence. There’s no pressure to participate and no expectations. Some guests find themselves talking with strangers about stargazing back in their own childhoods, or simply holding hands in silence. There’s a shared understanding that, for a few hours, you’ve stepped outside the ordinary worries of the world.
The sense of wellness comes not just from the beauty overhead, but from the way the experience is designed to care for you: the comfort of the seats, the warmth of the blankets, the gentle reassurance of the sky guide. You can feel it in the gratitude expressed in reviews, often mentioning the natural beauty and unexpected peace that follows.
With school holidays just around the corner – with New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Queensland all enjoying breaks from early to mid-April – timing couldn’t be better. The weather is turning crisp, but the recent rainfall promises clear, star-bright nights. Outback Astronomy updates their session times and sky highlights carefully, ensuring the online calendar of events reflects the conditions you can expect on the night, eg is the Moon about (book Discover the Moon, or possibly The Sky Tonight when crescent or gibbous Moon phases prevail), or is the sky darkest without the Moon (look to book into Hang out with the Stars® or Milky Way Hangout). It is a small and focused team at Outback Astronomy – feel free to text a question or email queries (ph 0427 015 225 and info@outbackastronomy.com.au). Staff will try to answer any questions before you book.
Outback Astronomy will text messages to guests on the day of their event to explain details like the weather, including temperature, arrival times and other important information. Arrive early if you can and give yourself permission to slow down. There’s something grounding about being there as the last light slips away and the first stars appear.

Wear layers and carry a sense of wonder. Heading into April and beyond, guests should always pack gloves, beanies and scarves to wear outdoors after dark, not to mention a very warm jacket. A hot clear day rapidly turns cool after sunset in the outback. All the main comforts, including recliner chairs, sleeping bags, food and drinks, can be booked online at the time of booking. Optics like binoculars and telescopes are provided. However, if you travel with your own binoculars, fold up chairs and warm blankets, you can bring these and avoid booking in extras like reclined chairs and sleeping bags. Ear phones (standard 3.5mm round, cabled variety) are used for commentary, so pack in or you can purchase online.
Absolutely. The team are warm, patient and tailor their stories to suit every level of curiosity. This can be a challenge when groups of people vary in age and knowledge, however, Outback Astronomy has 12 years of experience in keeping everyone invested and following the science and the stories. There is always something new to learn for everyone, even seasoned astronomers, and the view is spectacular!
Sessions are rescheduled if skies are cloudy or rain returns. Communication before your visit is clear and reassuring. Refunds are available if the skies remain dull and cloudy. Outback Astronomy recommends having one or two alternative evenings available for rescheduling. Mostly, the outback weather is dry and long rainy weeks are extraordinary.
It is entirely appropriate to bring a water bottle. Otherwise, food and beverages can be purchased online during the booking process. The PLUS ticket includes a small-meal sized snack, a beverage and a reclined chair and sleeping bag. The standard ticket includes bench seating (you should plan to bring a blanket or plan to layer up in cold weather) or you can bring your own fold up chair if you are travelling with such comforts. However, guests are reminded that no food and drinks are to be brought into the venue. Why? Outback Astronomy invested in building a kitchen next to the stargazing site to cater for guests, supplying food and beverages appropriate for the quiet, exposed open environment. For example, on cold still evenings anyone who brings in potato crisps is likely to be embarrassed! All guests will be focused on you crunching the crisps and the rustling of food packaging as you pass the packet among your group. The next day, food wrapping and other waste is seen blowing about the yard. That’s why food and beverages are carefully curated, to be appropriate for the venue.
Most evenings run 90 minutes, with plenty of time for questions and quiet reflection. Expect to be outdoors for up to 120 minutes. Guests have a warm reception in the main building prior to walking about 70 metres to the bespoke stargazing site. The text messages sent to guests on the day of your booking will highlight any deviations to the plans! That is why provision of your mobile number at the time of booking is vital – last minute instructions can be issued due to the weather or other reason.
