Description

Total Lunar Eclipse. On the evening of Sunday, 7 September 2025, a full moon rises. The sky brightens after sunset as the rising moon reflects sunlight all about the night sky. It is very bright – any place near the moon is awash with intense illumination. But this will change!

Our sky show begins after midnight, from 1:30am on Monday, 8 September 2025 (Yes! After midnight stikes on the evening of the 7th). The total lunar eclipse “totality” does not occur until after 3am local time, so we expect some guests may like to nap in their reclined chairs for an hour or so. We can set an alarm for you 😊.

The sky changes, slowly from just after 1am, as an eerie darkness increasingly descends to fill the surrounding environment. Earth’s shadow slowly crosses the moon, revealing hidden gems. If chilly, we will light up “draco”, our huge pot belly fireplace on our dining verandah.

From 1:30am we graze and gaze.

Our coffee machine will be working during this event. Hot chocolate and chai lattes also available. Sweet and savoury snacks to suit all tastes available. You must provide information about any allergies at the time of booking.

This is a wonderful opportunity to practice your astro-imaging under the big sky. Audio and ear phones will be supplied for the sky show event after 3am.

This is a beautify natural event to enjoy under the big, quiet outback sky. Come and join us in Broken Hill. Also included in the price is a copy of Outback Astronomy’s Stargazing Field Guide to help cement your knowledge of the sky during your outback travels.

By morning, we can observe some planets rising in the east as the Moon sets in the west. Telescope and binocular viewing throughout the event.

Finish off with breakfast and barista coffee, tea. Drinking water available. Price includes reclined chair with sleeping bag, side tables, food and beverages and access to optics.

What to wear, what to bring:  Bring layers for unexpected cold weather – puff jackets, thermals, beanies, gloves. Bring camera gear, your own night binoculars if you have some and prefer to use them. We can loan out use of a tripod, and standard adaptor, for binoculars during this event.
